American Cemetery A-E

Compiled and submitted by Nelda Gl Liles, 1997-2000

The American Cemetery is situated on the former site of Fort St. Jean Baptiste, established by Juchereau de St. Denis in 1714, located on Second Street in Natchitoches, La. The oldest marked burial seems to be that of Marie Anne D'Artigaux February 26, 1797, marked with a large iron cross whose engraving is barely legible at this time. According to the abstracted records of the Catholic Church Registers of the French and Spanish Post of St. Jean Baptiste des Natchitoches in Louisiana: 1729-1803 published by Elizabeth Shown Mills, 1977 there are numerous early burials documented in the 'parish cemetery'. It is believed that parish cemetery' refers to the present site of the American Cemetery, or in this general area, near the old fort. The cemetery has graveled car paths and is easily accessible. Heavily wooded and expansive, the cemetery is a pleasant and serene place as well as an historical reminder of those who have gone before. There are approximately 1400 marked burials. The listing therefore has been divided into three parts
