Lambertown Cemetery

Located a few miles north of Robeline, LA, the Lambertown Cemetery is the final resting place for many of the early settlers of northwestern Natchitoches parish. As noted in the deeds quoted below, the Lambert family was instrumental in establishing the cemetery in the latter 1800's, situated on land donated to the church and community for that purpose by James D. Lambert and his wife, Mary G. Lambert.

In 1998, descendants of this family and friends gathered to honor those settlers and to erect a marker to James D. Lambert, commemorating his Civil War Service. Dressed in period costumes, the descendants presented a biographical sketch of the life of James D. Lambert.

Born in 1844, in Montgomery, Alabama, James D. Lambert moved to the Shamrock area about 1850 with his parents, Isaac Buck and Ellener Thompson Lambert. Joining the Confederate Army in late 1861, James D. Lambert participated in battles in Missouri, Arkansas, and Mississippi with his regiment, the Pelican Rangers, Company G of the Third Louisiana Infantry. Returning to Louisiana after the war, James D. Lambert reared his family in the Shamrock area of Natchitoches Parish, where many of his descendants still live.

According to the deeds abstracted below it appears that the Lambertown Cemetery site was formally deeded to the church and community by James D. Lambert and his wife, Mary G. Lambert, in 1892.

July 6, 1891: State of Louisiana, Parish of Natchitoches: Before me, Phanor Breazeale, Notary Public in and for the Parish and State aboved written, personally appeared James D. Lambert of said parish, who declares that he had this and does by these present, grant and give and gratuitorsly donate unto the School Board of the Parish of Natchitoches, herein represented by J.D. Stephens, Jr., president of said board . . .a certain peice of property lying in the SW corner of SE 1-4 of SE 1-4 of Sec 31, T9, R9W . . . for the purpose of a school.

January 4, 1892: State of Louisiana, Parish of Natchitoches: Be it known that I, James T. Lambert and my wife, Mary G. Lambert, donate. . . one acre of land, SW corner of the SE quarter of the SE of Sec 31, T9, R9W . . . describing that acre of land sold to the Second Advent Christian Church by James D. Lambert in September of 1889 . . . at Lambertown, LA . . . said church represented by J.W. Johnson, . . . this is that land on which the new church and grave yard is sitting in Lambertown; we hereunto set our hand and seal in the presence of the undersigned this 23 day June, A.D. 1892

The first known burial at the site of the Lambertown Cemetery was that of the sixteen year old fiancee of James D. Lambert, who died during the 1860's. Although this information and the approximate location of her grave has been passed down in family legend, the name of this individual has been forgotten over the years. Recently, a marker was erected in memory of this young lady, courtesy of the great-grandson of James D. Lambert, Arthur R. Lambert and his wife, Sue Mitchell Lambert.

The oldest marked grave is that of Sarah A. Thompson, who died in October 14, 1875. The arched Lambertown Cemetery sign at the main gate indicates that the cemetery was established in 1875. There appears to have been several burials over the next few years, among them being those of Isaac Lambert in 1880 and Ellenor Lambert in 1884, the parents of James D. Lambert. Other early burials carried the surnames of Doolittle, Fox, Freeman, Holland, Jenkins, Johnson, Nelson, Prince, and Welch, an indication of the family names of early settlers of the area.

Lambertown Cemetery has approximately 560 burials. Located on the gently rolling hillside, it is fenced and well maintained. A memorial day is held annually. Mrs. JoAnn Parish is currently in charge of the cemetery records and may be reached at 1244 Freeman Loop Road, Robeline, LA, 71469. The Lambertown Cemetery and the adjacent Advent Christian Church are an integral part of the community, serving as a testament to the hardy pioneers who settled in this area.

Lambertown Cemetery is located about three miles north of Robeline, LA, on LA Hwy 120; turn east at the Shamrock Emmanuel Gospel Church and continue east for one-half mile. The Advent Christian Church and the adjacent Lambertown Cemetery are located on the right.
