Blake, Roderick

Written June 23, 1998

The Blake Graveyard is located about 3 miles west of Calvin, Winn Parish, LA, just past Cap Blake's home. I copied it in Jan 4, 1984 The following is a family profile I have put together of Roddick Blake and his wives and children. It is by no means complete, but it does include my notes and sources. The numbers refer to their position in my computerized database.

NOTE: some names of sources have been deleted as has other content that may be of a sensitive nature that abounds in all our families. (***) means that the person was "my" direct ancestor.

Roddick BLAKE and Adochia Hiatoni HENDERSON

1. Roddick1 BLAKE [7607], born 1808 in , NC. He married (1) abt. 1845 in , LA, Adochia Hiatoni (HENDERSON) BLAKE [7608], born 1824 in , AL. He married (2) between 1860/70 in of, Winn, LA, Mary Jane (SANFORD) BLAKE [12357], born 1842 in of, Winn, LA.

NOTE: Whoever originally gave the information in Mason's family said his father & mother was born in LA.

Aug 1997: Information by******... My grandfather was David Wyatt Blake and he gave me his grandfather's name as Wysman Roderick Blake, it was later shortened to Redick Blake. His brother Nathaniel Blake, my uncle, gave me the same name and the census records confirm Roderick Blake born approximately in 1812. He was born in North Carolina and eventually his family left Wake Co. NC and moved to Weakly Co. Tenn. D. W. Blake and N. M. Blake gave the story that the family helped to build the first woolen mills there. Redick's father had originally come from England.

In 1856 Redick purchased some land in Winn Parish. The description was the W1/2 of the NW /4 section of Sec. 4, T13N, R1E, containing eighty one and 48/10 acres at 75 Cents an acre. I have the original receipt, where he paid for it, in Monroe, LA, dated July 29, 1856. Sixty-one dollars and eleven cents was the amount written out and paid in cash. He probably moved to this land around 1856 because he was listed on the 1860 census in Winn Parish, LA.

What ever year Roderick died, there was a suspicion that he may have been poisoned. One of his children said that Roderick came home one afternoon and drank coffee. He went out shortly afterwards, to go look over the place. When he didn't come back, a search was made. He was found some five hundred yards away from the house, near a small creek. No autopsy was done, but his money belt was missing. The belt was never found and his children said he always wore it. No marks of violence was found on the body, but his face depicted that death was agonizing. We do not know the cause of death. It could have been a heart attack, but what happened to the money belt? No charges were ever filed, but it was known that a great deal of bitterness existed between his children and the second wife.[no documentation]

Since Adocia was listed on the 1860 Winn parish census and not on the 1870 census, it was presumed that she died during that time. We were told that her body was taken to her family and buried in the Indian Burial Ground, (Hwy 84 Cedar Bluff Cemetery) by D. W. and Nath. Blake. One other fact, apparently Roderick Blake died in the 1870's because he does not appear on the 1880 census. What year did he died? His gravestone is a crude block of concrete in the old Blake Cemetery on the Calvin Road (Hwy 156) next to Cap Blake's place. Why such a crude stone? He wasn't poor. According to the 1870 census, he was quite wealth owning 600 acres of land and his worth was $1866.00
