Lucindy Fisher Graham
(1859-1935)
John Anderson Graham, Sr. was born in Columbia
County, Arkansas in 1850. In the late 1800's John moved to Winn
Parish, and settled in the community of St. Maurice near the Saline
Bayou. He married Lucindy Fisher who was born 2 April 1859 near
Pleasant Hill, LA. John farmed the land, and horse traded in the
areas until his death in 1911. He died from a gunshot from a
10-guage shotgun in the hands of E.J. Gamble during a duel. Once
friends, the two men exchanged words over a debt owed by Gamble to
one of John's sons. John died June 11, 1911, and it is not known if
the senior Gamble made good on the debt owed the younger Graham.
Both John Graham and E.J. Gamble are buried in the St. Maurice
Cemetery adjacent to US Highway 71. Lucindy Graham died 20 Nov 1935.

John opened a grocery store in Winnfield with $500 on July 8, 1912. This store was located next to the railway station. In January of 1919 he moved the store to the soutwest corner across from the Courthouse where he remained in business until he closed the store in 1927. Pictured is John with his wife Ina (Shumate) and two of his children, William and Jewell.
