Cockerham Cemetery

Copied and submitted by Peggy Chandler Beaubouef
The Cockerham Cemetery is located about 8 miles north of Winnfield just off Hwy. 1232 on the Cockerham Cemetery Road. It has not been used since 1925 and most of the time is overgrown with pine saplings. The main section contains 20 graves that still have readable headstones. There is a smaller (Hargis) family plot just outside the main cemetery. Data shown in brackets was provided by Annette Womack unless otherwise noted. Hargis Family Plot

The gated entrance to the small, separate chain-link enclosure that contains the graves of the Hargis family.
The prominent obelisk headstone of the father, Ildefonso Albinus Hargis (April 20, 1853 – September 22, 1886),[s/o Dr. Quincy A. Hargis].
The infant Aurelius, bearing the inscription: "Son of I. A. & S. F. Hargis. Oct 4, 1831 Nov 6, 1881. Budded on earth to bloom in heaven." (Note: The carver mistakenly etched "1831" instead of "1881" for the birth year, but correctly carved 1881 for the death date).

These graves are situated in the secluded, contiguous Hargis family section inside Cockerham Cemetery, located off Cockerham Cemetery Road just north of Highway 1232 in rural Winn Parish, Louisiana. (

Aurelius J. Hargis (Oct. 4, 1881 – Nov. 6, 1881), an infant son of Ildefonso Albinus Hargis and Sarah Frances "Fannie" Cockerham Hargis.

HARGIS, Lilly V. -- Dau. of I.A. & L.A. Hargis -- b. 2 Nov 1879, d. 22 Jan 1882
